Look closely rather than searching for one grand viewpoint. Small cones, twisted trunks, low shrubs and the surface beneath the boardwalk reveal how plants respond to difficult conditions.
How to experience it
Use the designated self-guided nature boardwalk and stay on the established route. Pygmy-forest soils and plants are easily damaged by off-trail footsteps. The boardwalk makes this an excellent slow stop: read the interpretation, notice scale and resist treating the forest as a novelty.
Because Highway 1 divides Van Damme’s beach and campground from its inland trail system, consult the current park map before driving. Do not assume the beach entrance is the best starting point for every park feature.

The pygmy forest offers one of the Mendocino Coast’s clearest lessons in adaptation. It is quiet, subtle and genuinely unlike the redwood landscapes most visitors expect.
